Cypress Swim and Dive Team Rewrite Record Board during

As the conference championships came to a close on Saturday, the Cypress Aquatic team had crushed 17 school records, 13 athletes are headed to the California State Championships, and Head Coach Larry Beidler was named Men and Women’s Coach of the Year.

Sophomore Jeff Tsim helped led the team into school infamy, breaking his own records in the 100 and 200 yard fly set in 2009.  Although, Jeff did not stop there; as a crucial member of the Men’s 200 and 400 Medley relay and 200 Freestyle relay, he helped teammates Daniel Adling, Damon Chandler, and Derek Slayton demolish the previous records set in 2009 and 1975.  Jeff will finish his career with Cypress College this weekend at the State meet, swimming in the 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200 IM.

Conference Champion Damon Chandler swam the race of his life.  Beating everyone in the conference and erasing the 1976 record in the 100 breaststroke.  Going into the State Championships this weekend Chandler will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.  Teammate and fellow breaststroker Derek Slayton will also represent the school in the 100 and 200 breaststroke on the state level.  Following the conference championships Slayton signed with Pace University in New York, he will attend in the fall on scholarship.

The Lady Chargers were not to be denied, led by freshman Jacelyn Youngerman the ladies broke 10 records of their own.  Youngerman took control of the meet breaking school records in the 50, 100, and 200 Freestyle.  Freshman Emily Lehrman had fought all season long to break the 1991 school record for the 100 breaststroke.  Her goal was finally accomplished at the Conference Championships, she also broke the 1991 record for the 200 Individual Medley.

Sophomore Mallerie Lacer and teammates Hannah Warkentin, Emily Lehrman, and Jacelyn Youngerman continued their quest to dominate the Cypress College relay record boards.  The 200 Freestyle relay was broken by the “Magnificent Four” for the fourth time this season with an amazing time of 1:38.65.  They also crushed the previous record set in 1988 for the 400 Freestyle relay by 10 seconds.  Freshman Kelsey Kendall also broke records of her own starting with the 50 breaststroke, she would also aid in the record setting 200 Medley relay, again breaking another school record set in 1983.  All three relays are headed to the state championships this weekend at East Los Angeles Community College.

Freshman Frank Grey once again was unstoppable on the 1 and 3 meter diving boards.  Grey broke both of his own records and claimed Regional and Conference Champion on the 3 meter board.  Grey along with fellow male divers Josh Arno and Eric Kartchner will compete for top honors at the state championships.  Sophomore Megan Morse displayed her top level skill on the 3 meter board, once again dominating the competition placing first in the Regional meet.  She was also crowned Conference Champion and broke her previous record on the 3 meter board.  Morse along with fellow diver, freshman Heather Ross will represent the Lady Chargers at State this weekend.

With an unbelievable conclusion to the Orange Empire Conference Championships, the aquatics program has yet to disappoint.  This weekend the State Championships will host the top swimmers from across the state.  The Chargers will be ready to display their talents and will once again rewrite the record board.
